Everglades Gardens

One of the most spectacular garden settings in NSW, Everglades Gardens was first opened to the public in October 1936 by owner Henri Van de Velde. This became a traditional event in the mountains, and proceeds went to local charity groups. It eventually evolved into an annual festival celebrating the return of spring.

Bushfire had substantially destroyed an established house, orchard and ornamental plantings at Everglades in 1910 but remnants were utilised in the new design. The best of the existing planted and native trees on the site were retained and the garden was designed as a series of semi-formal terraces, each with a separate theme, down the slope.

Spread over 3ha, Everglades is a great venue for garden and heritage enthusiasts to explore the many hidden pleasures of this National Trust listed property.

These caverns are vast and there are numerous caves to tour with differing degrees of difficulty involved in the necessary clambering. There are handrails, electric lighting and concrete floors to make your progress as easy as possible.

Jenolan is an Aboriginal word meaning 'high mountain'.

Just the drive itself makes the journey worthwhile (2 wheel drive is fine but think twice and ask a local if it is wet).

Some of the best scenery in the mountains and great walks.

Zig Zag Railway

Constructed between 1866 and 1869, the Great Lithgow Zig Zag with its magnificent steam engines, thrills visitors from throughout the world. Your journey takes you through two tunnels and over three spectacular sandstone viaducts. It was constructed to enable produce to be taken to Sydney from the prosperous farming areas beyond the Blue Mountains and to develop the coal and iron ore deposits found in the Lithgow Valley.

The prodigious feat of bringing the railway from the top of the mountains to the valley below was accomplished by John Whitton, Chief Engineer of the NSW Government Railways. At the time The Great Zig Zag was regarded as one of the engineering wonders of the Victorian age.

Until 1994 the railway operated on weekends, public holidays and NSW school holidays only using steam. Since then the railway has expanded operations and now runs daily with vintage diesel Railmotors providing midweek services.

Facilities
Picnic areas and BBQ facilities
Refreshments & Souvenirs
Toilets (including disabled toilets).
Bush Walks

Location
The Zig Zag railway lies on the western side of the Blue Mountains about 10 km East of Lithgow along The Bells Line of Road. Clarence Station is the access point for passengers arriving by road because it has no main line railway connection. The Railway is well signposted at Mount Victoria on the Great Western Highway and at Bell on Chifley Road. There is plenty of parking space at Clarence. Travel time from central Sydney is approximately 2.5 hours.
